July 2024 - Lindsay day 1

Join Tour Leader, John Swart for 3 days of Lindsay-based gravel riding in the beautiful Kawarthas from September 24 to September 26. This mid-week ‘B’ paced ride is designed to accommodate new and experienced gravel riders on flat terrain. Some rides will offer two distances if there is demand from the group. We will ride three rail-trail routes as mostly out and backs. It always looks different going the other direction for the first time! The trails include: Victoria Rail Trail North, Omemee Rail Trail, and the Victoria Rail Trail South. These interesting routes travel through natural areas and are well-maintained. We’ll also incorporate trails along the Scugog River in the town of Lindsay. Highlights: Ken Reid Conservation Area, Fenelon Falls, Omemee waterfront, Doube’s Trestle Bridge, Peterborough, Bethany, and the Fleetwood Creek Valley Wetlands.

Day 1:  Tuesday, September 24 Trail: Victoria Rail Trail North – this northern route will take us through Ken Reid Conservation Area and into Fenelon Falls where we’ll stop for a coffee and/or snack along the waterfront. Start Time: 1 pm (Eat lunch before arriving. Driving time: St. Catharines to Lindsay is 250 kms – 2 hours 45 minutes via the 407) Start Location: To be announced Distance:  45 km return Note:  There is an option to extend this ride north toward Burnt River (65 km return) if part of the group wishes because we have a second Tour Leader, Els Swart for the return trip to Lindsay.

Here’s what you need to know about gravel rides!

Equipment: Tires are the key! Any road or touring bike will do as long as the tires are suitable. The trails are sturdy stone dust so can be ridden on 700x28c tires or larger, pumped to a minimum of 65 psi pressure to avoid pinch flats.

Pace and Skill Level: Riding gravel requires more energy to push the pedals, so our pace will be slowed down a bit from the usual ‘B’ pace.  This will be a group ride rated B4.

Cycling Clothing: Please wear bright clothing.  We will be on some city streets in Lindsay, Peterborough, and Fenlon Falls.
